AKC Puppy Star

AKC Puppy Star – Established by the AKC (American Kennel Club) to promote positive socialization from a young age, this class is perfect for the puppy between 7 – 16 weeks old, although any dog under the age of 1 can participate. This basic class emphasizes a lot of socialization and play with other dogs and people. This is where they learn bite inhibition and how to play nicely with other dogs. Even though this is the main focus of the class, some basic behaviors are also taught. Owner and dog are required to attend all six classes. Each dog/owner team is evaluated at the end of the six-week course and, if successful, can earn their AKC Puppy Star designation.

Six, one-hour classes: $150

AKC Canine Good Citizen

AKC Canine Good Citizen – Established by the (AKC) American Kennel Club to promote responsible dog ownership and to encourage the training of well-mannered dogs. Each dog/handler must attend 5 classes, with an evaluation during week 6. Dogs who pass the evaluation earn their Canine Good Citizen certificate. The evaluation consists of 10 objectives, all of which need to be completed in order to pass the evaluation. Test items include: accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, allowing basic grooming, walking on a loose lead, walking through a crowd, sitting and lying down on command and staying in place, coming when called, reacting appropriately to another dog, reacting appropriately to distractions and calmly enduring supervised separation from owner. Dogs do not have to be AKC registered and do not have to be a pure breed. Puppies who have had all of their vaccinations and boosters can also participate. Many therapy dog organizations have adopted the CGC as the first part of the therapy dog evaluation, so if you are interested in training your dog to be a therapy dog, this class is the perfect way to get started!

C.L.A.S.S. is a three-level evaluation for dog owners to demonstrate the real-life skills of their dogs, as well as a knowledge assessment of the owners’ understanding of basic dog handling and care. The three levels of the program are named after human university degree programs: B.A., M.A. and PhD levels for dogs. The skills in each level vary in the level of difficulty and distractions. Each level involves a six-week class with the evaluation being conducted during the sixth week or by appointment with the evaluator.
